Siletz River Food Web Study

2004-2005

Executive Summary

To determine if nitrogen or phosphorus limits primary production in a coastal watershed and to characterize the periphyton community.

Approach

Tasks

  • We used GIS to identify study sites. We selected representative deciduous and coniferous stream reaches from 1st-2nd, 3rd-5th, and 6th-7th order streams.
  • We collected periphyton on artificial substrates placed at all sites sites.

  • Spring and fall periphyton samples will be collected. Algae will be identified and enumerated.
  • We placed nutrient diffusing media at selected sites to measure N and P limitation in situ.
